2019 SCI Blues Challenge: Boogie to Beale

Blues Challenge Rules

The South Central Indiana Blues Society will hold its 4th annual SCI Blues Challenge: Boogie to Beale this year!  The SCI Blues Challenge is made up of four parts: The Band competition, the Solo/Duo competition, the Youth Group selection and the Best Self-Produced Blues CD selection.

The Band & Solo/Duo Challenge will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Mike’s Music and Dance Barn, 2277 State Road 46 W, Nashville, IN.  The Boogie to Beale event is a judged competition and showcase in which competitors take the stage and play a brief show (20 or 25 minutes) for a panel of judges.  The SCI Blues Society uses the Blues Foundation's rules and scoring as the basis for our competitions. The acts are evaluated based on an established set of criteria; Blues content, originality, stage presence, vocal talent and instrument talent.  For the Blues Foundation's complete set of rules, visit the IBC Section of the Blues Foundation's website at blues.org.

The winning Band and Solo/Duo artists will represent the South Central Indiana Blues Society at the 2020 International Blues Challenge (IBC), in Memphis from January 28th to February 1st, 2020.  The acts will be competing against other winning entrants – about 250 acts – from affiliated Blues societies worldwide.  The IBC is the nation's biggest and most respected showcase for Blues musicians, and represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its affiliated organizations for the Blues band and solo/duo Blues act ready to perform on a national stage.

The Youth Group selection and the Best Self-Produced Blues CD selection will be made by a committee of SCI Blues Society Members.   Our Youth representative will play in a Youth Showcase on Friday night of the IBC on Beale Street.  Our best Blues CD selection will be entered into the IBC Best Self-Produced Blues CD contest.  (Best Self-Produced Blues CD winner does not need to attend IBC.)

JUDGING CATEGORIES
JUDGING AND SCORING:

All acts participating in the SCIBlues Challenge: Boogie to Beale will be judged in five (5) categories. Each category will be scored on a scale of 1 to 10. The categories are:

Because music appreciation can be subjective, we have developed some suggested guidelines to help keep judges' scores more consistent:

To reflect the relative importance among the categories, the scores in each category are weighted. Raw scores for Blues Content are multiplied by 4, Originality by 3, Stage Presence by 2 and each Talent category by 2.
